Last Sunday's party
[Last updated: 14.12.2006 22:54]
Well, we had another great party with David Mancuso (the Loft) at the Light on Sunday. Hearing Ame's "Rej" on our
system was a particular highlight. Having my friend Matthew Ingram --
Woebot, the great dance music blogger, to most -- come along and have a
good time was another. But rather than give my usual analysis of the
party, I thought that posting up a thank you email we received from one of
our new dancers, Ben Turner, would give a fresh perspective. Ben has
given me permission to post his note, so thanks for that, Ben. Before I cut and
paste, I'd like to wish you all a happy holiday and a great new year.
I'll return to this Blog in early January...
Some thoughts and things to say following Sunday’s experience:
1. A heart felt thanks to all involved for everything involved … the balloons, the talcum powder sprinkling on the dance floor, the coatroom welcome and assistance, the buffet food (and there was me thinking it would be cheese and pineapple on sticks), the free water (topped up, with ice, throughout), the door people (always polite, always friendly), the little girl sticking stickers on the early dancers, the amazing and consistent and refreshing attention to detail – I have never felt so welcome. A real focus. Throughout. From beginning to end. L O V E
2. The sound. But then it’s not the sound. It’s the music, and the sound is a part of the music. I spent the first two hours dumbstruck but the sound. Walking around, hearing different instruments from different speakers. Listening. Hearing things I’d never heard before. The volume being just perfect. And then once I’d got used to this, and taken it as read, more incredible things started to happen. The sound would start to develop and move within a single piece like some sort of sonic equivalent of sonata form – themes and notes would be developed and reworked and somehow sound different from how they did two minutes ago. Amazing. Crisp. Warm. Each record surrounded by silence (which was filled with clapping and cheering). Songs I have heard many times before sounding refresher than spring or a breeze in summer. Hearing meanings in words, and musical emotions that had passed me by always before. I’ll be loving you always
3. The arrival, the moment, the welcome, a real good time. Fun. Laughter. Chatter. What a swell party this is! Wanting it to begin and then as it was ending not wanting it to end. Don’t say it …
4. The dance floor, and the dancers, and the energy … hollering, clapping, tapping, stomping, smiling. It was this more than anything that I really appreciated. Moving and being moved. A wonderful crowd. Inclusive. Something you could be a part of. The spirit’s in me
5. The lights were incredible. Programmed to perfection like the music. Real skill. Subtle. Emphasising a break, a crescendo, a part of the track, an instrument or a note – real skill. Just a little bit of jazz
I can’t accurately put into words how it made me feel at the time, and how it makes me feel today, and how it will make me feel tomorrow and for a long time on. As gushing as the above might be, it is true for me. And more.
Thank you.
All the people involved have created, designed, delivered and maintained a wonderful thing – a really wonderful thing. Could Heaven Ever Be Like This? Music will never sound the same again. I only dreamed that dancing could bring so much happiness. Lost in music.
Thanks again, Ben. Hope to see you at the March party! If you want to find out more and join our mailing list, please visit, visit www.loftparty.org
