Along with Jeremy Gilbert and Colleen "Cosmo" Murphy, I'm a founding member of the Lucky Cloud Sound System, which puts on parties with David Mancuso (the Loft) at the Light in London four times a year. The parties were hatched out of the David Mancuso presents The Loft compilation released by Nuphonic Records in 1999 (David Hill at Nuphonic was good enough to ask me to write the liner notes for the album). Nuphonic put on a hugely successful launch party at 93 Feet East for the release of the album and David (Mancuso, not Hill), who had first travelled to London in 1973, decided that he would like to return on a regular basis. When the second party with Nuphonic failed to materialize, David asked me I'd be interested in putting something on.
At first I was flummoxed. I had become friends with David through my writing (Love Saves the Day, the liner notes for the Nuphonic release, etc.), and had never dreamt of becoming a party promoter. David said that was precisely why he was asking me, and it made sense; David's Loft is run as a house party, not a club, and he has always been wary of the damage that can be wrought on the dance scene by the commercialising objectives of the music industry. As I started to try and get my head around the possibility of taking this on my friend and colleague Jeremy Gilbert mattery-of-factly said that if Nuphonic weren't going to put on another party with David then we should organise something. In a typically Lofty coincidence, Jeremy said this without even knowing that David had suggested the same thing. Having Jeremy on board made a huge difference ⎯ it'd be fun doing this with a friend! ⎯ and as all of this was unfolding David also approached his good friend Colleen, a cutting edge DJ who played at the Loft in New York in the 1990s and was now living in London. He suggested that the two of us should talk and before we knew it Colleen, Jeremy and I had formed a collective that also included Nikki Lucas (Colleen's partner from Bitches Brew, who has since stepped back in order to focus on her own parties) and Adrian Fillary (who had put on the decor at the Nuphonic party).
