The UK recognises Palestine while destroying Palestine
22 September 2025
There’s something truly sick and disgusting to say that you recognise something’s right to exist—it could really be anything—and at the same time continue a decades-long mission to destroy it. The recipient of the recognition might prefer to only be recognised it carries an iota of meaning rather than serves to cloak the actual ongoing destruction.
Starmer’s UK government is now committed to “recognising” the Palestinian state yet of course continues to supply arms to Israel that is carrying out a genocide against the Palestinians—a genocide that is more or less unanimously recognised by scholars, human rights groups and NGOs, with the UN formalising its own recognition last week. At the same time the UK is carrying out 50% of the spying missions taking place in Gaza while maintaining full trade, cultural and diplomatic relations. In other words the UK’s recognition of Palestine is entirely rhetorical and contains no substance whatsoever.
This isn’t to argue that the UK shouldn’t recognise Palestinian. It’s just that if it’s not accompanied by measures of substance it is close to meaningless and also risks acting as yet another tactic that deflects attention away from the criminality of UK/US/German/Canadian/French/etc leaders while enabling Israel to accelerate the genocide—which is exactly what’s happening.
It’s also completely clear that Starmer has only made this move, in tandem with Lammy, Cooper and Hermer, because of the huge domestic and international pressure that the solidarity movement has placed on Israel and because of the remarkable resistance of the Palestinians in Gaza. It’s certainly not because, given an even playing field, Starmer would have lifted a finger for the Palestinians—because for close to 48 months there has been no muscle movement in any of his fingers in support of the Palestinians. Nor has he bothered to remove the finger he’s stuck up his rectum. The only finger movement Starmer has made relates to the numerous Zionist pies that he’s got his fingers in.
Starmer even invited war criminal Isaac Herzog to London to eat pie while discussing the UK’s forthcoming moves on “recognition”, all the while assuring Herzog that the UK views Israel as an ally and won’t withdraw any of its active support. But Starmer didn’t invite the UK’s Palestinian ambassador Husam Said to dinner or arrange for him to speak at Chatham House. It’s just the colonialists who get to decide when they should grant the colonised the facade of recognition. They won’t actually speak to them. Meanwhile Husam has diplomatically welcomed recognition while noting that Palestine existed long before Lord Balfour decided to hand it to the Jews in 1917. Despite growing Jewish support for Israel over the decades, especially after 1967, there has always been Jewish opposition to Israel and the Jewish antizionist movement has grown exponentially since 7/10. Incidentally Palestine was the birthplace of Christianity and preceded the emergence of the UK and the United States.
It’s particularly preposterous that in making the announcement Starmer insists that Hamas must be excluded from any future state of Palestine. If we needed any confirmation that the UK’s colonial take on Palestine remains unrevised—and we really didn’t—here it is. After initially forming as an Islamic movement Hamas self-consciously modelled itself on Nelson Mandela’s ANC. (The UK now likes to see itself as an opponent of South African apartheid but proscribed the ANC and labelled Mandela a terrorist.) Hamas focused the al-Aqsa Flood operation of 7/10 on legitimate IDF targets, not civilians. The second wave of attacks that took the lives of Israeli-Jewish civilians were not organised by Hamas while many of the Israeli-Jewish civilians who died that die were wiped out by the IDF via the Hannibal Directive. For more than 70 years Israel subjected the Palestinians to systematic ethnic cleansing rooted in land seizure and successive massacres of civilians. The idea that Starmer believes he should set any conditions on who should represent the Palestinians when they negotiate the long overdue creation of an independent state, this in the midst of a genocide, the ultimate terror act, is repulsive.
As with the weaponisation of antisemitism, which has exposed the way that Zionists will label anything that challenges their authority and power as being antisemitic, so the proscription of Palestinian Action as a terrorist organisation has exposed what some or many have been slower to appreciate: that the rhetoric of terrorism has long been a colonial strategy designed to cover up its own terrorist activity. The UK, the US and other western powers that like to fling about accusations of terrorism and “refuse to speak with terrorists” believe that it’s also absolutely fine for them to terrorise the Arab citizens of North Africa and West Asia (an area colonialists dubbed the Middle East) as well as any African and Asian country that they want to bomb. The UK and the US have murdered millions of civilians in order to install obedient and corrupt proxy leaders or, when this hasn’t been possible, to generate civil war, thus preventing these states from acting in their own self-interest. The UK, the US and other colonial power have it that they’re spreading democracy as they layer lie upon lie. But if an Arab kills even a single western civilian it’s terrorism and is seen to be a legitimate pretext for all hell to break loose.
Even though Israel is without doubt the most terroristic state in the world right now, Starmer has no problem saying that Netanyahu and his colleagues should be at the table when negotiating the details of a future Palestinian state, despite Israel’s brutal record of repression, yet the leaders of the people it has brutalised must be excluded if not defeated. Instead Starmer should recognise Hamas as the legitimate political representatives of the Palestinians of Gaza, apologise to the Palestinians for motoring the establishment of the state of Israel and should arrange for the Palestinians to receive full compensation for the land, lives and livelihoods that they’ve lost thanks to the British.
Starmer is a racist, neocolonialist who is an active contributor to the genocide of the Palestinians, a fake, a hypocrite, a vacuum of human. He and everyone he surrounds himself with, from Trump to Netanyahu to Lammy to Hermer, have to go in order for Palestine to be free.
