Media Res Radio/Sweet Apricots interview, Paris

The public talk I gave on David Mancuso, the Loft and audiophile partying a couple of weekends ago in Paris is available online.

Many thanks to Mathias and the In Medias Res Radio team for organising the event and to Slym Joseph Bouzavitch for setting the wheels in motion. The Sweet Apricots party that followed later that evening will live long in the memory! Inspired by Beauty & the Beat and Lucky Cloud Sound System, Slim started to build his own Klipschorn speakers and host audiophile "Sweet Apricots" parties a year or so ago, and earlier this year I went on a 12-hour overnight trip to Paris to check out his gear “in the wild”.

I was super-impressed with the speakers--how can I come up with a good excuse to buy a pair?--and equally if not more taken with the party. Cedric Lassonde DJed that night; it was truly magical. Soon after Slim suggested I return to Paris do a talk about the legacy of the NYC Loft and then team up alongside Belle Beteand Cedric Lassonde to bring a slice of “All Our Friends” to Sweet Apricots.

It turned out to be Slim’s first party in a new spot in Montreuil, an outlying neighbourhood rich in community spirit, so I had a good feeling about the night from the very start. The feeling deepened as the floor filled up with so many familiar faces, a good number of them from London and the UK. What can anyone say about the party that followed? It insane, ridiculous, off the wall—thank you to everyone who turned it into such a celebratory night.

Upcoming Events, April - July

I started to DJ regularly at the first All Our Friends party in January 2018. As well as initiate a new party, I wanted to express something musically. It's turned into a compelling, challenging and joyous experience, and I’m now getting quite a few invitations to play out, which is surreal as well as humbling. Here's info on upcoming events, inc. some talks mixed in with the parties, beginning with Soul Stew in Norwich this weekend--can't wait!

Bordeaux talk

bordeaux .jpg

Last night I started to pack my record bag for this Saturday's trip to Bordeaux, where I'll be giving a talk about David Mancuso/the Loft and selecting some Loft classics to mark Cafe Mancuso's first anniversary. I've been buying all sorts of music over the last year or two, and every now and again I've wondered what David would thought if I'd played some of these purchases to him — because it wasn't easy to play a record to David and get him to respond with a nod of approval! Yet going through the box I've been preparing for the next All Our Friends party at Chats Palace, I was struck by the very decent number of Loft records I found there.

BORDEUX.jpg

David really did have an amazing ear for music. Or maybe along with the dancers he contributed to the creation of a third ear, as he once told me, because David always felt that Loft records were collectively selected. So those records that are still in the current box and are in so many people's current boxes--those records have instigated an awful lot of moves over the years and are collectively cherished. It'll be interesting to see how they go down in Bordeaux. Thanks to Gui for hosting and inviting!

All Our Friends | mixes and November party

Is anyone else still feeling the ecstatic vibes from last Saturday's All Our Friends party at Chats Palace? An intimate dance floor, amazing acoustics, delicious food, great lights, gorgeous decor, a totally up-for-it crowd and an amazing team to set up and take down our beloved audiophile sound system — who could ask for more?

Here's a little video from Cedric Lassonde, who shared the turntables with Belle Bete and myself.
