David Mancuso

I first met David Mancuso in April 1997 following a nudge and an elbow from Stefan Prescott, who was co-running Dance Tracks on East 3rd Street with Joe Claussell at the time. At the time I was setting out to write a history of house music but decided to take a minor detour when Stefan told me I needed to speak with the reclusive Loft host, even though his party predated Chicago house by some 15 years. During the first of many interviews, David spoke a language I barely understood. That language turned out to be the unwritten history of downtown dance culture, a history that turned out to be so enthralling to me it took me 500 pages to reach 1979. The result was published as Love Saves the Day in 2004, the title being a reference to David's foundational Valentine's Day party of February 1970, with which I opened the book. Along with friends, David and I went o to put on many parties in London. He remains one of the most compelling and influential figures in the history of the scene. Please bear with me as it will be a while before I manage to transcribe all of the interviews we conducted together.
